Where we travel in Guinea and West Africa
From Conakry and the coast to the Fouta Djallon highlands, plus trips to Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea-Bissau. Pick the places you like and we'll build the route.
Conakry
A big, dusty and free-spirited capital on Tombo Island and the Kaloum Peninsula. Once you settle in, you find friendly people, affordable restaurants and lively music venues.

Opened in 1982, the largest mosque in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Cathédrale Sainte-Marie
The main Catholic cathedral of Conakry, a striking landmark in the city centre.
November 22, 1970 Monument
Commemorates Guinea's defence against an amphibious attack on Conakry in 1970.
Keita Fodeba Centre for Acrobatic Arts

Maritime Guinea

Lake Samaya
Near Kindia: sail Guinea's largest lake to the friendly Fulani village of Misside Yalgueya, and return at sunset.
Soumba Waterfall
Cascades over a cliff into natural swimming pools, with a balcony restaurant overlooking the falls.
Kindia & Bridal Veil Falls
A crossroads town near the graceful falls on the Kilissi River.
Dubreka
Watch fishermen launch their colourful canoes and return with the day's catch.

A beautiful series of cascades over the rocks near the town of Labé.
Kambadaga Waterfall
A two-tier fall plunging about 120 m into the Tenee River, surrounded by dense forest.
Ditinn Waterfall
More than 100 metres long and one of the most eye-catching falls in Guinea.
Dalaba
Guinea's highest town: Miriam Makeba's house, the 1932 Palaver House and Villa Jeannine with panoramic views.
Douki
The top hiking base in Fouta Djallon: canyons, rapids and natural swimming holes, with a local guesthouse.
Fougoumba
Historic religious centre of the Imamate of Futa Jallon, founded in 1725, with traditional Fulani buildings.
Upper & Forest Guinea
Guinea's two remaining regions are best explored on trips of two weeks or more, often combined with a crossing into a neighbouring country.
Village life
Visit rural villages with traditional round houses and see everyday life far from the cities.
Upper Guinea
The savanna heartland of the Mandinka people, where Malinke is spoken, rich in music and oral history.
Forest Guinea
The green, forested south, home to many smaller ethnic groups and their languages and traditions.
Sierra Leone, Liberia & Guinea-Bissau
We also run trips across West Africa. Combine Guinea with its neighbours on a multi-country journey, planned and guided by our team and trusted colleagues across the border.

Guinea-Bissau

When to visit
End of the rainy season
Waterfalls are at their most powerful, but roads are slower. Ideal for photographers.
Dry season (January–March)
Easier travel on the roads, though some falls such as Soumba carry little water.
Getting around
Inland trips need a high-clearance 4x4. We provide the vehicle and an experienced driver.
